Practice 3: Lose a Battle, Win the War

  • Yesterday we practiced some long course sailing (and some fairly short course). If not too windy we will plan to do some close-in/short course sailing which places a premium on tactical positioning. In regattas, it is much better to give up 3 boats so as not to foul or lose them all. You have to avoid big mistakes especially in local 1-day events.
  • If you foul, you must do a circle
  • if boats collide or hit each other, or if you foul someone and there is no contact, even in our practice drills, one boat must do circles or you both are out of practice.
  • If you do not execute the rabbit start correctly, hop out and don’t foul someone instead. If you cant start to weather of the mark, you are out.
  • Practice starts in more wind: boathandling is aggressive and very athletic
