Team Race League & Umpire School

MISSION
The Admiral TR League and Umpire School’s mission is to support and inspire the love of team racing, while also providing a venue for aspiring umpires to hone their craft. Team racing can always use more umpires with more experience.
Severn School has a rich sailing tradition and has had a very successful team racing team led by Coach Tom Sitzmann. Since 2005, Severn School sailing has won 17 MASSA Team Racing District Championships and been on the podium for the Baker TR National Championship four times, culminating with a National Championship win in 2023. Our staff is open to coaching and helping all who participate toward the path of getting better at the game. The program has 18 boats, including 12 e420’s and 6 FJ’s. We will have 3 coach boats and possibly an observation boat as well. We hope to add drone footage as well.

This informal league is open to high school teams and to anyone seeking to become a better umpire, and we also encourage post-collegiate sailors to join in the fun. The goals include developing better team racing at our high school level, offering opportunities for umpires to train, and to share the fun of team racing with our local area.

TR LEAGUE
Starting fall 2025, Severn will host a team race league on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Start time is 1530. One of the inspirations for this league is the nature of other high school sports. We hope to make team race matches exist…. just like other sports have games. NESSA does a great job of this. We have 16 days scheduled. While this is targeted for high school teams, registration is open, so all team racers are invited. Preference will be given to active high school sailing teams. Starting the first week in September, The TR League will host matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1500-1800.

UMPIRE SCHOOL
We will have experienced coaches and umpires on hand to use our team race league as a perfect classroom for umpire mentoring and development. This is a no-stress opportunity to learn the craft of being a proficient umpire for the sport of sail team racing.

  • We encourage sailors interested in honing they judging/umpiring skills to come umpire during our matches.
  • We will have experienced team racers and umpires on hand to support/give lessons, and help develop new umpires for team racing.
