Race Day Today
Given the nice forecast we will ALL sail 2-person boats today and have a training race day. Main goal is to get our FJ teams up to speed for this weekend’s first Varsity regatta. Tomorrow we will go back to Lasers for our Cressy guys.

• No meeting before sailing. Get to the marina, rig, and head out ASAP. Stay near the coach boats while you warm up.
• Coach Beckman’s boat will anchor and be the full-time committee boat. Any extras will head out with him. Make sure you have an anchor.
• Rig boat 12 at end of day if possible.
• Today continue to build on your boat handling work and begin to focus a bit on tactics and strategy. Results today are not important, but working hard, improving, and communicating with your partner are. Remember that in almost all conditions the z420 is a little faster than the FJ, so for the FJ teams, results are really, really not so important.
• Today, before your boat hits the water, talk to your partner about 1-3 simple goals you have together and how you will work on them on the water. This is not optional. I’d like to hear in our debrief after sailing what your goals you set for yourselves on the race course were, and how it went. These can be very simple, and can focus on (among other things):
  • Communication
  • Tactics (boat on boat, when to tack, etc.)
    • positioning upwind
    • positioning downwind
  • Boat Handling
    • mark roundings
    • upwind balance, roll tacks
    • DW balance, gybes
    • speed… always going fast
    • changing gears
  • Starting
  • Strategy (overall gameplan for race success)
  • What is a successful finish for us today realistically? (“Let’s shoot for top 8”)
• Course will be a 4 leg W/L with a weather offset and leeward gate.
